Jazzathon
- JCQ's flagship
By
far the largest
of JCQ's events
is the annual
Cape Town
Jazzathon.
This multi-million
Rand venture
sees the staging
of the largest
free open-air
jazz festival
in the country.
It is held
at the V&A
Waterfront
over a four-day
period in
early January
- this year
was the eighth
instalment
and drew close
on a million
people over
the extended
weekend period.
The festival
has in recent
years drawn
the biggest
names in South
African music
- Hugh Masekela,
Letta Mbulu,
Sibongile
Khumalo, Allou
April, Ringo
Madlingozi,
Jimmy Dludlu,
Selaelo Selota,
Alistair Izobell
and Sipho
Gumede to
name but a
few.
Jazzathon
- The Robben
Island Connection
JCQ
also stages
the annual
Robben Island
Jazzathon,
which is a
paid concert
at one of
the most sought-after
venues in
the country.
Jonathan Butler,
Judith Sephuma,
Mory Kante
and Miriam
Makeba have
headline at
shows staged
on the island
in recent
years.
Community
Concerts
JCQ
has secured
a long term
partnership
with the City
of Cape Town
and the Department
of Arts and
Culture in
the Western
Cape to stage
a monthly
series of
community
concerts in
various underprivileged
neighbourhoods
in the Peninsula.
These shows,
called Vat
die Veldjie
Terug (reclaim
the fields)
are aimed
at allowing
residents
to reclaim
public areas
that had become
so-called
"no-go"
zones because
of previous
thuggery and
inappropriate
behaviour.
Various artists,
and performers
from the surrounding
communities
are invited
to perform
amongst well-known
acts, thus
including
big-name acts
to share the
stage with
upcoming artists.
Usually, these
community
concerts culminate
with a special
stage at the
Cape Town
Festival,
where the
best of the
various performances
are showcased
to capacity
crowds.
